Antidepressant Helps Repetitive Behaviors in Adult Autism

Treatment with the antidepressant fluoxetine may decrease symptoms in adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), new research suggests.

In a small, randomized controlled trial of adults with ASDs, those who received fluoxetine had a significantly greater reduction in repetitive behaviors after 12 weeks than those receiving placebo. In addition, 35% of the fluoxetine group showed significant overall symptom improvement scores compared with none of the placebo-treated group.
